How to Protect your Laptop from Theft !!!

Your Laptop is probably the most expensive portable device you Own. What makes it even more valuable for you is the data that you store in it – personal/official.

If you carry your notebook PC on business trips or for holidays, there might be a chance that you misplace it or in worst cases it may get stolen.

In this article we are bringing you some anti-theft technologies which are very easy to implement, by which you can you can prevent the device from stealing and some technologies can even help you to track your device.

Now lets go quickly into topic.

KENSINGTON LOCK:

If you look at the side of your laptop, you might find the little slot that’s called the kensington Lock (usually marked with a padlock sign).

This is a metal slot by which you can tether your laptop to a table or other immovable furniture.

This is where I found my slot on my Laptop !!!

To do this, you will require the Kensington Lock, which can be bought from online stores for $35 and if you are an Indian user use the link -> for around 200 bucks !!!

To secure your laptop, all you need to do is to loop the cable around a heavy or immovable objeck like a table leg, and push the metal anchor into the laptop’s slot.

This anchor can then be locked into place with a key or a combination lock.

The Kensington lock is useful when it comes to protecting your device from thefts at locations like airports, public libraries, hotel lobbies and coffee shops. It’s the first step in protecting your lappy when you leave it unattended.

Now lets go forward and learn how to track your lost buddy 

If your laptop is stolen or misplaced, it would help if you had ‘tracking software installed on your computer.

Now we are going to introduce you with the free software that will help you to do this.

Prey – a free tool from the prey project.

First of all, visit the preyproject.com website, download and install the software on your laptop.

Is supports, Windows, MAC OS X and Ubuntu/Debian machines.

Steps to perform once you are on website.

1. Click on Get started on the home page.

1. It will pop up a window with registration form, fill your details and click on SignUp.
2. Then it will take you to your home page, as a free user you can track up-to three devices from single account.
3. Download the prey software on the device which you want to track and then once the installation is completed you need to configure your Prey on your device.
4. Click on existing user as you already signed up in the website.
5. If not click on new user if are configuring the prey on your device for first time and if you did not signup in website.
6. Now your device is protected and please refer to the below image for various options available.
7. In the case of a lost device you can just logon to prey website and login with your credentials an find your device, play a siren, send an message to the device and you can even lock the device.
8. Note: this actions can be performed only if the device is connected to an active internet.
